As I explained in an earlier post, The Figment Awards or “Figgies” as we like to call them recognize excellence in fake band creation and marketing. The nominees are selected by our Figment editorial board, but the winners are selected by you and your fellow Figment players. So thanks for taking the time to cast your votes, we appreciate it.

We’d also like to congratulate all of the nominated bands for their great work in 2009. It’s never easy to go home empty handed, but your work did not go unnoticed and we have every reason to believe you’ll be back next year, maybe even with a new band!?

Larry’s Media Picks
- David Bazan – Curse Your Branches – A great record from the former front man of Pedro the Lion. David is an amazing force in indie rock and it’s easy to forget that he’s an incredible musical talent.
- We Were Promised Jetpacks – These Four Walls – In my opinion this is one of the best of 2009.
Eric’s Media Picks
- Fool’s Gold - A world music collective out of Los Angeles, CA inspired by a shared love of Congolese, Ethiopian, Eritrean and Malian music and American dance-pop. Oh yeah, and did I mention the lead singer sings in Hebrew? Cuz he does!
- Dave Rawlings Machine - This incredible sideman for Gillian Welch finally steps into the spotlight and delivers a fantastic debut solo record. If you like Americana, folk and bluegrass you’ll love this album. Sorry, no MySpace tunes, but you can listen to snippets on Amazon.

This Week’s Word of the Week
Larry’s Media Picks
- Lyle Lovett – Natural Forces – It’s nice to hear Lyle Lovett put out a complete new album, and one that makes such good use of his witty and well crafted song writing. I have to admit I’ve an irrational love of his music, but it’s been quite a while since I was so impressed with a new album of his. I was basically hooked when I hear the chorus of “Farmer Brown / Chicken Reel” it involves Lylye choking his chicken.
- RX Bandits – Mandala – This one is really hard to describe so I’m not going to. Play it loud and hold on for the ride.
Eric’s Media Picks
- The Above – If you like garage rock and the sounds of the British Invasion then The Above are for you!
- Angus Khan – Sounding like Angus Young and Genghis Khan in a back alley bar fight, Angus Khan is a five-piece piece biker metal supergroup out of Hollywood, CA that features members of punk rock ‘n’ roll favorites B-Movie Rats, the Streetwalkin’ Cheetahs, ADZ and Jesters of Destiny. Combining the raw power of AC/DC and the Stooges, this band is just pure unadulterated rock n’ roll.

Larry’s Media Picks
- The Heavy – The House That Dirt Built – Rocked out songs with an R&B back beat and just pissed off enough to be loud and fun. I think I keep calling them The Heavies and I do that on the podcast too. It’s not plural.
- Mike Farris and the Roseland Rhythm Review – Shout! Live – If you like the Heavy you’ll like this. More funky than Rock and roll though. Reminds me alot of the great Maceo Parker album – Life on Planet Groove.
- Girls in Trouble – I bought this becuase of the sticker on the cover alone: “What if the girls from the bible started an indie rock band?”, had to buy it, I have no idea if it’s any good as I’ve only listened to it once.
